Living in Civic Hospital | West Centre Town | Dow's Lake
Civic Hospital
One of the nicest, leafiest, most established communities in Ottawa is the Civic Hospital / Island Park neighbourhood. A swath of land that runs from the Central Experimental Farm up to the Queensway and northward along Island Park Drive, this is a deeply rooted community featuring elegant, older homes amidst a plenitude of green space. While convenient for anyone working at the Ottawa Hospital Civic Campus (including the Ottawa Heart Institute and the Parkdale Clinic), this is a centrally location with ideal commutes to downtown and elsewhere by bus, car, bicycle or even walking. When you live in Ottawa’s Civic Hospital & Island Park neighbourhoods, you’re also near a wealth of shopping, dining and recreational activities. That’s because you’re just a stone’s throw away from Little Italy, Hintonburg, Wellington West, Dow’s Lake, The Glebe and Westboro. Here you can walk out your front door and have your choice of all kinds of great parks and trails for jogging, cycling or walking. Homes in the Civic Hospital neighbourhood tend to be large single-family dwellings on bigger, meticulously maintained lots. There’s not a lot of turnover here, so if you see a Civic Hospital or Island Park home listing you like, give us a shout ASAP as it’s not likely to be on the market very long.
West Centre Town
Another community with close proximity to Downtown Ottawa and within the central core of the capital city is West Centertown. Stretching from Dow’s Lake at the southern end, upwards to the Ottawa River, these are actually a few distinct neighbourhoods that have built up over time: Dow’s Lake, Little Italy, Somerset (Chinatown) and LeBreton Flats. Close to work, play, shops, restaurants and urban nature, West Centretown is a great part of Ottawa to call home. Because of the well-defined and varied nature of these neighbourhoods, West Centertown homes in Ottawa offer you the choice of anything from singles, semis and towns to mid-rise and high-rise condo. Fancy an older home in an established neighbourhood? Dow’s Lake homes are just that, with easy access to the Glebe, downtown, even the world-famous Ottawa Tulip Festival. Just around the lake at the top end is Little Italy, offering everything from quaint semis to lofts to condos in the newest and biggest high rises in Ottawa. Cross the Queensway and you’ve got an up-and-coming area along Preston Street and Somerset, with great potential due to its proximity to downtown Ottawa. And just north from there is LeBreton Flats, with new mid-rise and low-rise condos and a whole host of future development in the works.
Dow's Lake
Named for 19th century landowner Abram Dow, Dow’s Lake is a man-made lake walking paths, and is home to jewels of the city, like the Arboretum, Fletcher Wildlife Garden, and Agriculture Museum in the Experimental Farm. The Spring Tulip Festival at Dow’s Lake is a showstopper! Larger classic homes dominate this exclusive, in-demand area, given Dow’s Lake’s proximity to Carleton University, the Civic Hospital and the easy access to all the major thoroughfares in Ottawa. Jump on the OTrain at Dow’s Lake station to get to the airport or the LRT line. Stroll to the Glebe for the shops of Bank Street and Lansdowne Park, the home of the Ottawa Redblacks.
